Introduced under the Climate Change Act 2008, the Carbon Reduction Commitment will be the UK's first mandatory carbon trading scheme. The scheme, which is expected to begin in April 2010, will target up to 5000 large non-energy intensive organisations including hotel chains, office based corporations, supermarket chains, large local authorities and government departments, with half-hourly metered annual electricity usage of over 6,000MWh (which equates to an electricity bill of approximately £500,000 and over).
Failure to report operational carbon emissions to the Government could result in financial penalities and reputational damage.
Organisations that fall under the Carbon Reduction Commitment will have a ranking in a Carbon Reduction Commitment League Table which will be based on their carbon footprint and any early actions taken to reduce their carbon emissions.
